San Diego and Los Angeles attract the tourists, but Riverside is the real Southern California gem. The museums, endless entertainment, and fine dining options are a well-kept secret. The city is home to California's second Gold Rush. You can learn about this rich history by wandering anywhere in the city.
Riverside is famous as the home of the citrus tree boom. In 1984, Riverside opened the California Citrus State Historic Park, with an activity center, amphitheater, and picnic areas surrounded by the original fruit trees.
Want more history? The Riverside Metropolitan Museum has over 100,000 artifacts. Locals also love the Fox Performing Arts Center, a Spanish Colonial Revival-style theater that opened in 1929. It was the first theater to screen Gone With the Wind in 1939. Now, local and national artists take to the stage.
The Entomology Research Museum is home to 4 million insect specimens. The March Air Force Base Museum, once operated by the Air Force, was founded in 1979. It has more than 70 aircraft on display, including an SR-71 Blackbird from World War I. The Riverside Art Museum houses contemporary and traditional artwork, and features art classes.
Even Riverside's parks are rich with history. Mount Rubidoux is home of the first Easter Sunrise Service in the nation. The park is nationally recognised as the inspiration for Easter Sunrise Services held elsewhere. Popular with hikers and cyclists, the park also hosts Fourth of July fireworks each year, launched from the mountain's peak.
Castle Park opened in 1979 and has since become a family-favorite spot. The park has been expanding and now offers 27 rides, a miniature golf course, a water playground, an arcade, and carnival games. In November, locals flock to the Festival of Lights. It features more than 3.5 million lights downtown as well as a firework display. USA Today called it America's best public lights display.
