Located in the Tualatin Valley, Beaverton is seven miles west of Portland and a Portland metro-area suburb. Home to Nike's world headquarters, Beaverton is the sixth-largest city in Oregon. It has a population of about 100,000.
The Aftalati tribe lived here before the arrival of European-American settlers in the 19th century. They were an offshoot of the Kalapuya tribe and had a village close to the Beaverton and Fanno Creeks. Their village name was "Chakeipi," meaning "place of the beaver."
The first land claim came in 1847 by Lawrence Hall, who established a grist mill. In 1868, the first railroad line brought growth to the small farming community. This helped drive the town's incorporation in 1893. During the 20th century, Beaverton served as a home to early automobile dealers, including the Ford Motor Company. Currently, the area boasts prominent industries in many sectors. They include electrical equipment, software and IT development, scientific and medical equipment, food processing, and sporting equipment and apparel.
Beaverton has superb public transportation, with a transit bus, commuter rail, and light rail services. The city introduced the MAX Light Rail system in 1998, with seven easily accessible stations.
The city has many historic landmarks, wineries, restaurants, boutiques, and beautiful parks. Often called "the gateway to Tualatin Valley's wine country," Beaverton has some of the region's most popular urban wineries. Take tours of Cooper Mountain Vineyards and the Beckham Estate Vineyard.
Cooper Mountain Nature Park is a former volcano. It has oak tree groves, prairie, wetlands, ponds, and forested areas. The park also has a nature center, botanical gardens, children's playgrounds, and 3.5 miles of bike and hiking trails. Another popular attraction in the city is the Beaverton Farmers Market. It's Oregon's largest all-agricultural market. Enjoy artisanal food products, fresh local produce, and live entertainment.
The town has an array of culinary gems to suit all palettes. Stop in at Best Baguette, a fusion cafe featuring authentic Vietnamese Banh mi sandwiches and French pastries. Get a bite at Decarli. They serve Italian fare made from locally sourced ingredients. And don't miss The Fireside Grill, a lively place with traditional American dishes and local wines.
In the mood for some retail therapy? You'll find a range of eclectic and vintage-inspired boutiques in the city. Local favorites include the GHM Boutique and The Vault Vintage Clothing Boutique.
As far as events go, Beaverton hosts an array of family-friendly festivals all year long. Have a blast at the Beaverton Celebration Parade and Beaverton Restaurant Week. Catch a movie at Flicks by the Fountain, and soak up some culture at the Beaverton Night Market.
