Clearwater is a beautiful city of just over 100,000 in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Found in Pinellas County, this city has coast on both the Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Clearwater is known for its gorgeous beaches, and as the site of the global headquarters for the Church of Scientology.
Swimmers, surfers, and sunbathers love Clearwater Beach. Two and a half miles of white sand on a barrier island, this beach features a marina, shopping, and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy parasailing, jet ski rentals, boat tours, fishing, and mini golf. Beaches like these make Clearwater a destination for tourists and retirees.
Outdoorsy people will also enjoy Clearwater's many parks. Caladesi Island State Park is a calming destination for kayakers, swimmers, and hikers. Sand Key is a quiet barrier island that offers fishing, beaches, and a nature trail. Finally, those wanting to escape the crowded beaches can visit Honeymoon Island with its scenic pine forests.
This city is also home to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. This non-profit organization is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine animals. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium also strives to educate the public and allows visitors to view its creatures. The rescue population includes dolphins, otters, sea turtles, rays, sharks, pelicans, and plenty of fish.
Locals can also visit Pier 60, a fishing pier and recreational park over 1,000 feet long. The pier features a bait and tackle shop with fishing equipment rentals, souvenirs, and T-shirts. This spot is also home to "Sunsets at Pier 60," a nightly entertainment series with crafts and live music.
Clearwater has a fascinating and complex history. The region was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga people. In 1835, the US Army built Fort Harrison in the area, a strategic outpost during the Seminole Wars. The US government began sponsoring settlement in the area with the Federal Armed Occupation Act of 1842. The settlement would grow throughout the mid-19th century and became a target for Union gunboats during the Civil War.
By the early 1900s, Clearwater was home to about 400 permanent citizens. It was incorporated as a city in 1915 and designated the seat of Pinellas County. In World War II, Clearwater became an important training site for US troops who would be sent to the Pacific. The city has continued to grow into the bustling beach community we know today.
However, with its warm, southern climate, Clearwater is also home to its share of pests. Palmetto bugs, mosquitoes, and roaches can invade your home and ruin your peace of mind.
