When European settlers arrived, Delaware was home to the Lenape people. Their kinship system consisted of matrilineal clans. The European settlement expanded and eventually drove out the Lenape in the 18th century. The first European settlers in Wilmington were also the first Swedish settlers in the United States, who arrived in 1638. They formed Fort Christina, along the Christina River. The region was claimed as "New Sweden" until 1655. Then, it was conquered by the Dutch in 1655, and became part of "New Netherland." The Dutch ceded most of their land to the English. Wilmington would remain under British control until the American Revolution. The city was the site of the Battle of Brandywine, a small skirmish in which the British routed George Washington's forces.
